Texas Holdem Poker Terminology

Texas Hold’em poker has a terminology all of its own. To understand and become a successful online player it require understanding of the Hold’em poker terms. Our glossary will help you learn the poker terminology and slang.

Bad Beat

A bad beat is when a clearly stronger poker hand such a flush or full house is beaten by an underdog call that hits a stronger full house or four of a kind on the river draw. This usually cause the losing player to go on "tilt"

Bad Beat Jackpot

A special progressive jackpot prize some online and offline poker rooms provide to the victim of a “bad beat”. If certain criteria’s are met such as losing with four of a kind or straight flush the prize is usually divided among the players at the poker table.

Baby

A five or lower ranked texas hold’em poker card.

Backdoor Hand

When a player hit an unintended long shot hand with two additional common cards on the turn (fourth street) and river (fifth street).

Backdoor Flush

When a player have three flush cards and need to draw the additional two cards on the turn and river .

Backdoor Straight

When a player need to hit additional two cards at the turn and river to make a straight draw.

Back Into

To complete a Hold’em hand using both of the final two community cards dealt on the "turn" and "river"

Backraise

To originally limp a Hold'em bet (call a pre-flop bet with minimum amount) and re-raise when facing a raise from opponents in later position.

Baggage

An observer of a poker game who has lost his/her entire stack and cannot play.

Bait

A small bet with the propose to encourage opponent players to stay in the poker game.

Bank

In online poker the bank or house is the chips storage tray image at the top of the table where players can add founds, request hand history and more.

Bankroll

The total amount of disposable money a poker player has set aside for funding his/her poker play. In online poker rooms the sum of the total deposited account stack.

Beat the Board

To win a Hold’em poker game with a pocket card that can create the best hand using the community cards when high value cards like flush or straight are dealt on the table.

Beer Hand

The 2 and 7 unsuited pocket cards (7-2), the lowest ranked starting hand in Hold’em poker

Behind

(1) Acting after a given position, a player seated to the left acts “behind” the player who is sitting to the right. (2) To have the worst ranked hand before the fifth street (river).

Belly Buster

An inside straight (e.g. 6,7,9,10) where only a specific ranked middle card draw (8) will give the straight hand

Bet

To put chips or money into the pot in a round of poker betting.

Bet For Value

Is a betting tactic when a player expects to have the strongest hand bids with the intention to increase the pot size by getting called by weaker opponents.

Bet Into

Betting instead of calling or checking against a player who bet intensely and probably have a stronger hand.

Bet The Pot

To bet an amount of chips or money equal to the size of the pot (AKA pot-sized bet).

Bicycle

The lowest ranked unsuited straight hand in Hold’em poker (A, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Big Blind

A fixed starting hand bet amount (BB) that must be posted by the player sitting clockwise in the second position from the dealer or dealer button (or by newly joining players from any position) before the cards can be dealt.

Big Pair

A pair of poker cards with rank value over ten (like QQ, JJ or KK)

Big Slick

Suited or unsuited Ace and King (A-K) starting hand cards.

Blank

A Hold’em community card (board card) that is unlikely to improve any of the players hands.

Blind/Blinds

Mandatory bet/bets added to the pot in Texas Hold’em poker, posted by players before any cards are dealt in each round. The small blind is paid by the player to the left of the button (dealer) and the big blind is paid by the player to the left of the small blind. In the case of a heads-up game (game with only 2 players) the player sitting on the dealer button places the small blind and the other player the big blind.

Blocking Bet

A smaller than average sized bet made by an out of position player in order to reduce the pot amount at the river. The blocker bet is designed to prevent opponent from making a big bet that can not be called or to discourage bluffs.

Bluff

Showing strength with a poor hand by betting aggressively (raising or reraising) to get other players with superior hands to fold.

Board

The 5 visible cards (community cards shared by all players) dealt face up on the flop, turn and river in Texas Hold’em poker.

Boat

A poker hand combination usually called a “full house” that consists of a set (three of a kind) and a pair cards. Boat is one of the strongest poker hands.

Bot

An automated unethical or illegal software that plays poker at online poker sites without players intervention.
